Classroom Teacher Period – Developing Key Competencies with a Focus on Civic Responsibility, Environmental, and Health Education

The article examines the Classroom Teacher Period (in Bulgaria this is a mandatory period built in the curriculum for each grade and meets on a regular basis, as a regular period of the weekly schedule) as a time and place for education, focusing on civic responsibility, environmental, and health education. It analyzes Ordinance No. 13 of September 21, 2016, by the Ministry of Education and Science in the Republic of Bulgaria, which emphasizes on the importance of these educational areas and outlines their implementation. Strategies such as project-based learning, interactive methods, integration into subjects, and community partnerships for effective education are presented. A survey was conducted to investigate the approaches and methods used, as well as the key competencies developed in students during the Classroom Teacher Period and to determine the need for additional training for classroom teachers. The article addresses specific issues suitable for the lower secondary level, including citizens' rights and responsibilities, sustainable development, and a healthy lifestyle. The article aims to provide guidelines for class teachers on effectively utilizing the Classroom Teacher Period to develop key competencies for fostering socially responsible and active students.
